Okay, so what did you guys think about Watchmen?
I saw it last weekend and wasn't a massive fan... I liked the last 45 mins of the movie when they did typical superhero type things. The first two hours though... I came so close to walking out. It was way too gory for me.

Oh, I absolutely LOVED it.
Question, though: have you read the original?
I find there's a line among viewers, and almost everyone I know who loved the book thought it was the best adaptation EVER.
I will admit, though, that the gore was a bit too much at time, and it lost its poignancy (like when the guy's arms were sawed off) - going from frame to frame in a comic is a lot better than live-action for violence.

I saw the movie first and have started on the comic, but sadly I had to return it to the library before I got past Dr. Manhattan's flashbacks. So I'm a tad angry with myself but without any previous knowledge I was floored!
It was really very good; visually I think it trumped 300 and Sin City (though my boy claims it was more like a hybrid of the two of them), and the complexity of the characters? It was wonderful, surprised me so much.
I was particularly fond of the Comedian. Yes, I know he was a pig, and a horrible horrible man, but 'this is it' just hit me square in the chest. And here I thought I was watching a movie whose aim was to jam as much action and spandex into it as possible... and behind my favorite song (Sound of Silence) and the sex, violence and spandex, I found a wonderful movie with a very powerful warning.

I think there were similarities in the style - Zack Allen made a point in all three to use exact images from the comics to start and/or end scenes. There were some moments where I felt I could freeze-frame and put it side-by-side with a comic book panel and there would be little difference.
But I feel that this one is a lot truer to the comic than either 300 or Sin City. (I'll confess - I wasn't a big fan of 300, especially in comparison to the graphic novel.) Of course, I should also note that I'm not a huge Frank Miller fan. ^_^;;
I like that you mentioned the music - it was incredible. Some of the songs were cited in the original graphic novel (like the Bob Dylan piece in the opening credits), so it was great. It created a fantastic mood piece.
