Title: Lessons
Genre: Romance.
Rating: PG
Summary: Tris learns another of life's lessons.
Author's Notes: This was actually written in September 2005 for circle_fic on lj and I never posted it anywhere else til recently, when I found it and put it up on my art/fic lj. The peculiar pairings ficathon made me think it might be appropriate to put this one up.
Tris watched him flirt with the blonde lady. A bolt of pain struck her and lightning began to dance about her braids. She recognised the sensation and knew it for jealousy. Glimpsing a quick flash of a smile as she reined her magic in, she wished that it was her that he was smiling at, her to whom he was talking to so animatedly. He claimed not to like such gatherings, but Tris knew him well enough to know that a small part of him enjoyed the small talk and gossip. Another wave of jealousy surged through her as she saw the two of them leave, his female companion clinging to his arm, gazing adoringly at him.
Feeling stifled in the heat of the room, she went outside to get some air. The air on the balcony was filled with the heat of summer, the few breezes in the air whispering about her as she tried to clear her head. But perversely, the more she tried not to think about the blonde, the more she would think about her. She knew it was pointless thinking about it; he would only spend the one night with her, and in any case, he would never consider her in such a light. For she was still a child in his eyes, despite being an accredited mage with her medallion, despite having taught a student of her own, despite her looking after a child and teaching her what little she knew of academic magic, despite her loving him with all her heart.
So lost was she in her thoughts that she didn’t notice the tall, lean figure walk up behind her. The sudden touch of a hand on her shoulder jolted her from her thoughts. Whirling, she turned to face the object of her love. “I thought you had left already?” she asked bluntly, her heart racing at the gentle pressure of his hand on her shoulder.
“Well, we were leaving, until suddenly, it began to rain above the poor woman. Just above her,” he smiled wryly as Tris blushed. “You want to tell me why you saw fit to turn my date into a drowned rat?”
“I didn’t mean to. It must have slipped away from me somehow,” she said quietly.
“Surely you have better control than that?” he asked, raising an eyebrow sceptically.
“I don’t know how it happened,” she repeated earnestly.
“Tris – ” he began.
“Niko,” the other woman had found them. “Shall we leave now?” she asked, smiling brightly at him.
“Work on your control,” he commanded Tris. “And don’t stay here too late,” he added as he turned away, the blonde’s hand in his. Tris stood there blankly as they left, realising that no matter what else he taught her, he would never teach her the ways of love.
