Title: Lifesize
Rating: G
Summary: Written for the 31_days challenge.
Prompt: #2 - Walking on higher ground.
Theme: Tris.
“Is it everything you expected?”
“It’s nothing like I expected,” Tris admitted, making Niko smile. “But it’s amazing all the same.”
Her former teacher leaned back in his chair and stroked his moustache while she took a sip of her tea. She hadn’t seen him for months, but he still looked exactly the same: salt and pepper hair tied back in a horsetail, dark, secretive eyes, and a finely cut jacket, with what Tris recognised as Sandry’s fine embroidery on the collar. She put down her teacup and he smiled at her. “So you’re blending in rather well then?”
Tris frowned. “You make it sound like I’m some sort of spy.”
“I’m sorry, that wasn’t my intention,” he said with a faint smile. His face suddenly turned serious. “But you are...happy, doing this? Aren’t you?”
Tris looked down at her hands, unsure how to answer. The university was nothing like she had expected, but everything she had hoped for. There were so many people. She hadn’t made any friends yet, though that didn’t really bother her. One of the librarians had recognised her the other day, which had given her an odd, happy feeling. Despite everything that she was hiding, and everything she had to lose...maybe she was happy.
“You know I’m glad it’s going so well for you,” Sandry was saying, “But it’s not you. You don’t belong there.”
It stung a little, the way she said it, though Tris kind of understood what she meant. She watched her foster-sister’s back as she chopped and diced at the kitchen bench, her sun-kissed brown hair pulled back severely from her face. Sometimes Tris forgot how much all of them had changed.
“It’s what I want. I don’t want to be some sort of freak for the rest of my life,” said Tris.
Sandry turned around and gave her a look. “You’re not a freak. Maybe if you just accepted yourself the way you are—“
“I do. But that doesn’t mean I can’t do other things, normal things.”
“Tris,” Sandry sighed. “Sometimes I wonder how someone so smart can be so incredibly stupid.”
