In honor of Mother's Day, I thought it might be nice to have a thread dedicated to celebrating Tortallan mothers and mother figures. So, who are some of your favorite mothers and mother figures in Tortall? And why are they among your favorites? One of my favorite mothers in Tortall is Ilane of Mindelan. She is always supportive of Kel and gives her honest advice. Plus, she has a great sense of humor and a strength Kel can admire. I also really have a massive soft spot for how Kel becomes like a mother to Tobe. Maude giving Alanna advice about how it is easier to kill than to heal before Alanna left for page training and then sticking around to be a nurse for Alanna's own children felt very maternal to me. And Eleni Cooper seemed to be a good mother to George and mother figure to Alanna (answering her questions about periods and boys and such) even before Alanna married her son. By no means is this a comprehensive list, just some examples to hopefully get the conversation started

I'm new here, but I grew up reading Tortall and absolutely falling in love with the universe, so very excited to read through these threads! I had to jump in here to say that Kel being inspired to really go for knighthood by her mother defending herself with the glaive (if I remember correctly) is one of my favourite things. Kel in general having a lovely and supportive family just makes me happy given the general lack of supportive parents the other protagonists tend to have!
Queen Lianne always seemed like a wonderful person and I always imagined without Roger's interference, she would have played a larger role.
Finally, I don't actually think Alanna was a very good mother (I think she tried her best, but the whole thing with Aly demonstrated that she wasn't very present, and she didn't really understand her children well) but I was touched by the portrayal of her relationship with Aly, especially the brief resolution at the end. Like, they are so different, and Aly will always carry some resentment, but they also love each other. And it's really hard to be the child of a legend; I think the children of Jon and Thayet feel that too on some level, so it was interesting to explore what it would look like especially given Aly's attitude!
