Somebody super kindly tagged me in a nostalgic post about fandom this morning, and it made me think about the fads that the TP fandom has been through. The TP fandom was my first one, and I've been in and around it for about 16/17 years now (yikes), so I've seen a few fads come and go. What fads have you seen come and go? Off the top of my head... - When everybody fancasted Megan Dodds as Josiane (I think this was mostly the film Ever After) - When everybody associated Dido's Hunter with Jon and Alanna - Same for At the Beginning for Daine/Numair - When literally no pairing was off-limits (this started on the Dove, I think, and again over here, especially during the Sandwiches craze) - Kel's stint as the most pairable character - Yuki's stint as the most expendable spouse - Kel/Neal, transforming to Kel/Dom, with no Kel/Cleon phase - Joren being the TP fandom's Draco, complete with leather pants - Everybody loves Wyldon - Alanna goes to the convent fic craze - Kel stays in the Islands fic craze - That time we thought we might get a Maura book

I remember a time when Kel trains as a Shang warrior stories were pretty popular. Also a time when a lot of stories would just exist to bash a character. I think Jon (because of Kel's probation) was a big target for those.

- Joren being the TP fandom's Draco, complete with leather pants I thought it was Roger and leather pants? ...oh wait, no, Roger was sparkly tights and bendy squires! How naive we were... - Owen's sole character trait in fics being "jolly". Also, are you telling me everyone no longer loves Wyldon? I did not get the memo about that "fad" being over!

Wyldon is always in style for me at least I do remember that Owen just being associated with "jolly" and nothing else stage, and it annoyed me. Owen does say jolly a lot but he also has other sides to his character like his wild courage and crazy honesty. He's just such a vibrant character who shouldn't be reduced to only saying "jolly" all the time.

OMG, bendy squires. Also 'Contes and their squires'. Noooo, I still love him, but for a time, it was a universal all-consuming love - more fanfic has probably been written about him here than any other male character. Anyway, that was based off a suggestion from Lisa, so I'm going to shift any blame onto her. Particularly because she's not around to defend herself.

Joren being the TP Fandom's Draco made me chuckle. I seem to recall phase of Joren redemption fics being popular with a Kel/Joren paring phase to accompany it.
tbh I've never read a lot of TP fanfic other than what I've read on here. IMO its hard to find decent fanfic outside of GL where the TP fandom is concerned. And I'm pretty picky with my fanfic.
I think Kel/Cleon was never a phase simply because Kel/Cleon was kind of a bizarre choice canon-wise to begin with. I still prefer Neal or Dom over Cleon to this day. Mostly Dom because as much as I ship Kel/Neal, I actually like Yuki. I'm looking forward to any 'Next Gen' story that might come about with Neal's daughter training for her knighthood. That was supposed to be a thing right?

Also the brief "Very Secret Diary" fad Phew, I was worried for a moment there that Wyldon love was being relegated to a passing fad! Though I agree it's slightly less present on the board now than it was. Also because of Lisa...?

That was supposed to be a thing right? I remember the period of the Joren redemption fics and the Kel/Joren pairings. I was never a fan of either. I never really saw anything redeemable in Joren (he always struck me as extremely arrogant and quite sociopathic), and I never saw any reason to pair Joren with Kel beyond the fact that Joren is handsome. Joren and Kel just seems like it would be a very toxic relationship. Kel deserves better than Joren in my opinion. I used to read a lot of TP fic on fanfiction net but most of it there was garbage with a few gems in it. I was so happy to find Archive of Our Own and later to find here. The standard stuff on Archive of Our Own and here seems much better than what is on fanfiction net. I never venture over to fanfiction net anymore, ha ha. I don't think that Kel/Cleon give off the vibe of a relationship that is really long-lasting, so that is probably why there is more Kel/Dom and even Kel/Neal stuff out there. I personally prefer Kel and Neal as friends since I actually like Neal/Yuki even if canon doesn't go into great detail on their relationship. I actually remember a phase of Neal's Daughter next generation fics on fanfiction net but most of them weren't that good. I think the premise could be really interesting, but most authors fumbled it. I'd love to read well-written next generation fic, though.

I remember there were at least a couple long fics that were based on Bloodhound when it had been announced but hadn't come out. Beka/Rosto was also the most popular pairing (debatably, still is?).

I feel like such a baby fan! I've been reading the books for at least 15 years but wasn't involved in fanfic until recently. It's fun to see you guys outline all the different plots and fads that have come and gone!

Tamari I feel like Beka/Rosto is probably still pretty popular, it's still my favourite ship for that particular series. I think there was a lot of overt Beka/Rosto moments in Terrier in particular and Farmer, for me at least, seemed to come out of left field in the third book - TP didn't seem to take the same time setting up that relationship that she has all the others she's done in the past. He just kind of... appeared.

Alanna goes to the convent? Kel goes to the convent? Kel joins the Shang?

You know what's actually funny? I never shipped Kel/Joren and even now I wouldn't say I shipped it, but there was this one Kel/Joren fic that actually was done quite well and it's the only ship to date that's made stay up until 7 in the morning.
But I've been away from the fandom for a minute. I do very much remember Kel being the most easily paired and I'm not sure if that's ever changed lmao. Also, I'm still in love with Kel and Dom and Tammy's newest AMA at reddit just makes me more sold on it.

I think Kel/Cleon was never a phase simply because Kel/Cleon was kind of a bizarre choice canon-wise to begin with. I still prefer Neal or Dom over Cleon to this day. I feel like Kel/Cleon was romantic and over-the-top flowery enough in canon that not a lot of fans felt the need to write fic. Kel being the 'little black dress' of TP fandom was definitely a good fad! Still going strong, imo. Kel/Wyldon was a pairing I saw a lot of back when I first joined. Faleron being a ladies' man. Neal/Evin. Okay, most of the fads I'm thinking of now are less 'fads' than ' my fads'....

Faleron being a ladies man Lol Why do I feel like he would be unintentionally a ladies man though? I mean, he's always pretty shy around Kel, what with the "Mama raised me polite" and all? Faleron is one of my faves tbh

I see your Kel/Wyldon and raise you: Kel/Jon
That was mostly specific to Glake, but general things I remember across the interwebz (when we still called it that with a z and all):
Everyone fancasting Leelee Sobieski as Kel because of that Joan of Arc film.
Everyone fancasting Sarah Michelle Geller as Alanna because of Buffy.
