Series: Grime & Punishment Title: Working like a dog (aka " Rosie is awesome") Rating: G Event: Sharp Shooting Words: 200 Summary: It's been a hard day's night / And Beka's been working like a dog Sometimes, when the winter wind blew like a sharp knife straight through the streets of the Lower City, when the rain fell in icy sheets and the gutters ran with water and sewerage and who knew what else, when the people were difficult and hostile, when nothing seemed to go right, Beka wondered why she had chosen this life. She dragged herself home to her tiny cold room, chilled to bone and heartsick over all the poverty and devastation she saw and all the help she couldn’t give people, because she didn’t have the time or the money or they just wouldn’t accept it. Those weeks were always hardest to go back to Provost House, to face the implicit “I told you so” from Lady Teodorie and to try to justify, once again, her life choices to her disapproving sisters. But then, the next week, the sun would come back out and Beka would wake with fresh hope in her heart. Her spirits would lift and her steps would lighten and she would resume her patrols with her eager sense of duty. And sometimes, with the thanks of a grateful parent after a hard chase, it was all worth it.

I love this. You have somehow managed to capture Beka and her dilemmas perfectly in just 200 words.

Such epic scene setting in a drabble! I really love the insight into Beka's daily grind (also the alternative title is excellent).
