Series: The Drowned and the Saved Title: The Raka Assassin Rating: PG-13 Event: AU Archery Competition: Decathlon Words: 238 words Summary: A raka assassin comes for the former King Dunevon. Warning: character death.
-
Blood trickled from the cut above his eyebrow, threatening to blind him. His right leg had gone numb. Taybur tried to shift his weight, testing. He was on his last legs, now; his breath came out in heavy gasps. “He swore a blood oath,” Taybur managed. “He swore to renounce all claim to the throne!”
He glanced around, trying to see who was left. He thought he caught sight of Ulasim, somewhere in the mass of fallen bodies. Surprising, that he’d fought and died with the guardsmen defending Dunevon.
“I know,” said the raka assassin. The scarlet scarf fluttered at his waist; he pulled out two more daggers from that make-shift sash, their undulating blades calling to mind the waves of the Azure Sea. It was traditional, Taybur knew; the kris was the weapon of raka heroes in those oral tales, and the liberationists desperately needed to marshal every raka symbol they could, in their bid to expunge the last Rittevon stains from the Isles. “But he is too dangerous to live. You know this. The Queen knows that; even if she doesn’t admit it. Believe me, I take no pleasure in this but it must be done.”
Taybur raised his sword. Dunevon crouched in the corner behind him. He said, “Taybur…” Taybur closed his eyes against the pain in that voice. Pain, and fear.
“Goodbye, my king,” Taybur said. “It’s been an honour.”
He fought. They died.

The continued use of the kris is really good here, and, y'know, from expediency instead of justice this time. I actually prefer things playing out this way to canon because the raka actually get a say in Dunevon's death (and I assume Elsren as well), no *more* innocent people die, it turns things greyer than in canon, and it's not so deus ex machina. Oh, and I feel for both Dunevon and Taybur. Obviously.
