Title: The end of waiting
Rating: G
Prompt: #106 - Aftermath
Summary: Gary and Cythera get sick of waiting. Shameless fluff.
---
Gary pushed open the door to the sitting room. Immediately Cythera flew out of her chair and flung herself into his arms. He held her tightly, burying his head in her golden hair. Quietly, his grandmother rose from her seat and slipped from the room, giving them privacy.
They held each other tightly for a few moments, with Cythera quietly weeping into his shoulder.
Gary tried to find the right words. “You’re so clean,” he finally sputtered out, gently wiping her cheek. Cythera started laughing though her tears. “I’m not.” He looked down at his clothes; they were dirty and torn from the Coronation battle. There was plaster dust on his shoulders, and the velvet trimmings were stained and hardened with dried blood.
Cythera mashed her face into his shoulder. “I don’t care,” she mumbled. “I’m just so relieved you’re alive.”
“Hey now,” Gary soothed. “I am okay. We made it through today.” He smoothed her hair. “Jon is King and Roger is … gone.”
He thought darkly of the day’s events. Alex’s treachery. Eldorne and Tirragen’s attempted rebellion. His father’s heart attack. Countless wasteful deaths.
“I don’t want to wait any longer,” Gary whispered.
Cythera lifted her head. “What?”
“I don’t want to wait any longer,” he repeated. “After today… I don’t want to wait.”
Cythera squeezed his hand. “Gary, we discussed this… it wasn’t proper to announce our engagement until after the Coronation, and after today… well I guess we will have to wait until a proper mourning period is over…” she trailed off, looking downcast.
“I don’t mean announcing,” Gary said thickly, he voice full of emotion. “Cythera, I love you. I don’t want to wait another damn day to be married to you. We’ve already waited too long.” His brown eyes looked hopeful. “Let’s do it. Tonight. We could go down to the city, to a temple, and marry right now.”
Cythera swallowed hard. Gary could see the conflict and uncertainty in her eyes. Suddenly, she smiled.
“Let’s go.”
