Title: Foolish (Part 1)
Rating: G
Prompt: 13. Once Upon A Time
Summary: How easily her dreams were molded by the hands of her mother.
A young girl with rich, dark curls tumbled ungracefully into her mother’s waiting arms.
“Mother! I heard a most wonderful story from Marisa today. Would you like to hear it?”
The girl spoke with such enthusiasm that her mother couldn’t resist motioning her daughter to continue. The young girl cleared her throat, ignoring the reprimand from her mother about her unladylike mannerisms. She then began the story in a grand manner, with her arms sweeping wide.
“Once upon a time, in the Kingdom of Tortall, a young, noble maiden became the realm’s most heroic Lady Knight. She went on adventures far and wide…”
By the time her daughter finished with a flourish, the young girl’s mother was frowning. Seeing this, the child’s striking green eyes started to shine with tears.
“Did you not like it, mother?”
The woman gathered her daughter into her arms and placed her in an elegant chair before sitting opposite of her. She placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder and stared into her eyes with a serious gaze.
“Now, darling, listen carefully. It’s time you put aside your fairytales and foolish wishes. You were born to be a lady, and a lady you shall become. Those…Lady Knights,” the mother paused with a small look of disgust on her face before continuing, “were nothing but a disgrace to the kingdom. Ladies succeed with beauty and charm, not swinging swords around like barbarians.”
She squeezed her daughter’s shoulder comfortingly. “Now, now, it’s all right dear. Just think, one day words will be your weapon and your unmatched beauty your shield. I dare say you may win the heart of a handsome prince!”
The girl broke out into a falsely cheerful smile, masterfully hiding her sadness. “Oh mother, I’m much too young for boys! One day, however, I will be exactly as you said. I will be the most wondrous lady, for I doubt I would find battle to my tastes. Mayhap I will marry a prince.”
“That’s my darling. Not another word about this nonsense, do you understand?” At the girl’s nod, the elegant woman gave a brilliant smile. “Excellent. Now off to a bath, Delia, we’ll be having tea soon.”
The girl walked off with her head held high, but with no excited skip in her step. It was worth a try, but she knew deep down that her destiny was at the mercy of the Lady of Eldorne. How easily her dreams were molded by the hands of her mother. She shook her head slightly. Lady Knights, what foolishness? One thing is for sure, however. If my mother is any indication, I will be a formidable lady, indeed.
