Eleni leant over the cradle, smiling at the sleeping baby within. After a long and tiring day he was finally asleep. She was still filled with wonder whenever she gazed into his adorable face – although admittedly less so when he was screaming blue murder.
"Getting lost in his eyes again?"
Eleni glanced up and frowned at the...man...with the salt and pepper hair that had appeared on the other side of George's cradle. "Shhh! I finally got him to sleep!"
Kyprioth arched one eyebrow. "So? I've been keeping an eye on him. He doesn't seem that bad."
He reached down a hand to stroke the baby, but Eleni smacked it away before he could actually make contact. Then she grabbed his wrist (which was thankfully solid) and dragged him from the nursery. Depositing him in a chair, she propped her hands on her hips and glared at him.
"What do you want?"
Kyprioth shrugged. "I just wanted to check in, see how things were going. I did say that I would be around every now and then."
Eleni gave a small smile. "That was over a year ago. Forgive me for thinking that it was unlikely for a Trickster to tell the truth."
Kyprioth pressed a hand to his chest. "I am hurt. Deeply, deeply hurt."
Eleni's smile widened and she swatted him playfully on the arm. "Sure you are," she said before turning away. She was stopped by a warm hand on her shoulder. Kyprioth gently turned her until she was looking directly into his eyes. For the first time she could recall, they looked serious.
"I will always be here to watch over you and George." He started fading away before her very eyes. "You can count on me."
Eleni rubbed her shoulder, staring at the spot where the rascal god had just been.

It was late, the candle burned almost out, but Eleni was still up. She sat in a chair by the fire, staring moodily at the flames which illuminated the fresh tear tracks on her cheek. She glanced up as a figure materialised next to her chair. Her frown deepened.
"I don't want to talk to you."
Kyprioth's voice was surprisingly gentle. "You're angry. I understand."
"Damn right I'm angry," Eleni hissed at him. "You said you'd watch over him. You promised I could count on you. And now look what's happened!"
Kyprioth shook his head. "Dear one, I was watching over him. Don't you think his sentence should have been a lot worse than it was, especially given his history. I got him off lightly."
Eleni turned her head away, not wanting to believe it. Kyprioth rested his hand on her arm.
"I can't change who he is or the path he's chosen. No one can. But I did promise to watch over him – and I will. I won't let any harm come to him."
A kiss on her cheek and he was gone. Eleni was left alone with fresh tears and a small seed of hope.
