Title: Forbidden
Rating: PG
Prompt: Forbidden, #47
Summary:
Series: Seven Per Scent
Set: B
Warnings: Mention of suicide.
Notes: This is based off Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes short stories and novels, and the BBC TV show Sherlock. I don't own anything.
Balor's Needle was foreboding. It had been the haunt of the palace when I was a page, and in a way, it still was. Even after all my yearmates married and had children, we still heard of gruesome suicides by the month - and all the blood ended up on the Needle. Why anyone would drag a young maid up there where she could have easily died was unanswerable.
Alex was busy interviewing the two kidnappers who were found out almost right away by Keladry's dog, but the man who paid them was in the fields, pretending to represent chivalry.
The evidence was abundant. There were two notes left by the supposed squire, a map of the palace written by him, and the fact the the kidnappers confessed to receiving money from a man named Joren. It was even confusing how effortless it was. The case was almost in our hands.
"I compared the notes to Joren's handwriting." Alex had come up behind me while I was ruminating. "They match. Those two men I spoke to confessed to being employed by Joren. Inspector Ironarm was in the room and took everything down."
I smiled and turned to Alex.
"No, Gary, we can't arrest him yet," he said, interpreting my glance correctly. "We can't even go near him. The thing is, figuring out who the man is was cursed easy. But getting to him is a different matter."
"Right… if a noble is on his own lands, you can't detain him. But," I said, "He'd have to leave at some point! He can't stay on his lands forever!"
"He just might," Alex muttered, half to himself.
