"We had a customer - he used to come quite often. He always wore a dark coat and his shoes clicked when he walked… he was strange. Well as strange as any man taking poppy could be." Knuckles tightened behind the counter, fingers mindlessly scattering jars.
"Did he ever tell you his name? No, of course he didn't."
The man looked up from his bangs. "Oh, don't you purr at me, city man. We sold this Alex whatever he asked for, and he had the gold to back us up."
Elegant slippers made their quiet way around the desk. "Does he still buy from you?"
"He hasn't been here in years and I don't think he'll be coming back."
"Really?"
