Title: Distractions
Rating: PG
Prompt: Distractions
Summary: I wonder about this one. I feel like Kel wouldn't be absolutely thrilled about this moment when/if it finally came. But I'd like to hear what you guys think. I appreciate any feedback or critique you all give me. Kel is need of distractions as she leaves behind an old assignment.
Kel rode south on the Great Road North. At her back was a squad of blue and silver trimmed men. She knew these men well. In fact, she had even once commanded them back when she was still a squire. Trailing slightly behind on her left, Tobe rode with her, seemingly deep in conversation with the mare that carried him. Directly to her right rode the squad's leader. Dom was as handsome as ever in his King's Own uniform. It was always a pleasure seeing him, but this time she pegged the presence of himself and his entire squad as unnecessary.
“You know you didn't have to come, right?” Kel asked.
“On the contrary, these are orders.” Dom grinned at her with all the mischief of a naughty lad. “And orders are orders. Isn't that right Lady Knight?”
“But they need you at Fort Steadfast.” She protested.
“Come on, Kel. The border's cooled off tremendously since the war ended. Steadfast can spare a single squad for a week or two.” He told her.
Kel frowned.“Still, I don't need an escort.”
“You're just doing to argue about this aren't you?” He asked, amusement lining the tone of his voice. “Why can't you just recognize a favor when somebody's trying to do you one? My lord wanted to do this for you.”
She fought back the urge to heave a hefty sigh. That was just like Lord Raoul, always looking out for her. Of course she appreciated it. He was a like second father to her. It was just that she felt their squad could have been more useful elsewhere.
“You could've stayed at New Hope. At least half of you until you were to head back.” She said quietly. “They're rushing to finish all the improvements before winter hits and they could always use the extra hands.”
There was silence between them for a moment. Dom broke it. “Kel, it was time. You know it. I know it. In fact, I thought you'd be a little more pleased about leaving.”
It was true that she'd ached for a new assignment for well over a year now. Kel suddenly felt tired. The weight of commanding New Hope had been lifted off her shoulders, but she still hadn't felt any better since realizing she was now the ex-commander of New Hope. “I did too.”
“It makes you nervous. Leaving them.” He eyed her. When she didn't say anything he continued. “I understand. I can't really blame you after everything that's happened. But Kel, they're going to be fine. It's not like you left them with no one.”
Still, she'd be less nervous if both Neal and Merric weren't leaving as well. Her two year mates would be following suit within a matter of months after they'd trained their replacements as Kel had. The war was over and now knights were needed elsewhere around the realm. Every time she left New Hope and it's people she found herself holding her breath. Kel only hoped that this nervousness would go away. She had to trust the people left in charge of New Hope. She had to trust the people of New Hope.
“Hey.” He nudged her gently. “You know what you need? You need to visit your Yamani friends. As soon as you get back to Corus. Won't you like that?”
That made her smile. “I would like to see how Lianokami has grown. It's been a while. Shinko says she's gotten so big now.”
“There, see? And after seeing her you could go tell Neal's lady all about how troublesome he's been since she last saw him.” He grinned. “Then after that, how about we spar a little bit? You and the Yamani ladies could school us naïve lads with those glaives of yours. Maybe we could even squeeze in a little archery before supper. Oh, and of course. We need to visit that tavern I love so much. You know how great the wine and cider is over there. You'll join us, won't you, Lady Kel? We're going to need someone to save us in case we get ourselves into trouble. You know how lads are. Can't have the Lord Provost on our tail's for disturbing the peace now can we?”
Something inside her chest began feeling lighter as he continued to smile at her, gently urging her to do the same. I still don't know how he does that, she thought to herself,.
Kel grinned as the town of Bearsford came into sight. “You've gone to the trouble of planning so much for me. It would be churlish of me to say no. Very well, Sergeant Domitan. I accept.”
