Title: Eyes Like Yours
Rating: PG
Prompt: Eyes
Summary: Couldn't resist the title. I just kept thinking of that song when I was writing this. So, Have you ever met someone with eyelashes so long that you were drifting in and out of attention when they were talking to you? I had a mentor like that for one of my college classes. It was really distracting. That inspired me with this. Dom loses a chess game and he blames Kel.
Kel put a hand on her rook. There, she thought. If I move this there then he has no escape. After surveying her pieces one more time, Kel moved her black rook piece forward towards Dom's white king piece. Satisfied, she straightened up. “Checkmate.”
Dom sat back in his chair with a sigh. “I used to be able to actually beat you at this half the time. Being a commander's made you better.”
“I could teach you how to play shogi.” Kel offered. “Then maybe you'll get good and beat me at that.”
“Shogi?”
“It's the Yamani version of chess. It means “general's board game”.”
Dom waved a dismissive hand. “I think I'll pass. I don't need you beating me at anymore strategy games. I have my dignity after all.”
She shrugged, trying to keep back a triumphant smile with little success. “It's not my fault you weren't concentrating. You could’ve had me if you saw my maneuver early enough.”
“Like Mithro's shield it isn't!” Dom laughed and leaned forward in his chair. “I always get sucked into those eyes of yours when you have that focused look on your face. You, Lady Kel, are not a very fair opponent for a man like me.”
Kel furrowed her eyebrows at him. He told her loftily. “Pretty things make me lose focus.”
Rolling her eyes, she began putting the chess pieces back in their starting places. Now, he was just being silly.
“I'm serious, Kel!” Dom half-chuckled at her. Then he asked, “Has nobody honestly ever told you how mind-baffling your eyes are?”
“Dom, there are a million girls in this country who I'm sure are more than willing to help you with your condition.” Kel laughed. “Don't be silly. I'm sure if you look you'll find one with a pair of eyes so dazzling you'll never win a game of chess again.”
“That's ridiculous.” Dom told her. “I can honestly say I've never met anyone with a pair of eyes quite like yours. I don't think I've ever even seen someone with eyes like yours. Haven't you ever looked in a mirror?”
Kel paused for a moment. Of course she'd looked herself in the mirror plenty of times, especially as a page. When she was younger, the only thing she really remembered seeing in the mirror was a girl who was taller than she'd like to be and solid enough to be nicknamed Cow by other children back home. She made her peace with it as she got older, but her face was not something she ever was concerned with too much. Unless of course Joren and his cronies had left bruises for her to show off. “I just never particularly noticed them.”
A smile tugged at his lips. “Then I'm telling you now. Kel, your eyes are something, well, mystical would be the only word appropriate here. More than once I've found myself listening to you, but not remembering what you actually said. Your eyelashes are so long I think I could brush them.” He gestured to his own eyelashes. “The color of your eyes looks like somebody painted them with the colors of the earth and then used magic to add some light in there for effect.”
Kel blinked at him. She wasn't quite sure what to say to all that. When she didn't answer, he went on. “I didn't mean to write a poem or anything, but I think somebody ought to tell you what you have there.”
“Well... um, thank you.” It took a moment, but she finally cleared her throat. She tried to change the subject. “Do you want to play again?”
“Sure.” Dom gestured towards the board. “But if I'm going to have any chance at winning you're going to have to play blindfolded.”
