Title: Spirit Rating: G Prompt: Spirit, #18 Theme: Understated Genius Series: Instrumental Summary: The first king of Tortall has feelings behind his new palace. Notes: Inspired by the song "To Build A Home" by The Cinematic Orchestra.
"There is a house built out of stone Wooden floors, walls, and window sills Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust This is a place where I don't feel alone This is a place where I call my home."
-"To Build A Home", by The Cinematic Orchestra
The sun washed through the new Tusaine windows and splashed on the marble. The king of Tortall watched it and smiled, and gazed down at the cracks in the floor, at his broken boots. His pointed foot tapped the ground in an echo and he began to dance. He didn't care if anyone saw him; he didn't care if his hose got covered in paint. "My new home," he whispered. "My palace. The start of an empire." He swept his hand through the dust and coughed. It quickly turned into a laugh as he gazed at the ceiling wonderingly. "Look at that," he cried. "Tertius Rain's done it again!" Flowers and gods never seemed more lifelike; no other artist could have painted it better. His feet still moved with restless rhythm, and his eyes - his eyes were hopeful.

Ooh, Tertius Rain, that's very clever. I love Gareth's childlike joy here, it really shines through in the writing. You're so good at conveying emotion in a small snippet. The one thing I'd change is that angels, since they're Christian, wouldn't really fit into Tortall. Gods would work, though!
I'm looking forward to more about him!

Thanks mistrali! The angels/Christian didn't occur to me, I'll fix that.

I love the way you responded to this prompt, and love the song you included (now I have to listen to it, aha).
I agree with mistrali, too. There is such a feeling of his delight and growing hope in this piece. It is tangible. Lovely.
