Title: Frost Rating: PG-13 Prompt: Frost, (#39) Character/Couple/Theme: Mattes/Sabine Series: Caged Dog Summary: Sabine writes to him in the winter. Just one sentence. Notes: This is sort of a Mastiff AU. Therefore, spoilers for Mastiff. Kind of.

The first frost settled in over Corus, and snowflakes drifted in through the bars of his window. He caught one of them, watched the delicate patterns of ice melt against his palm. Life imprisonment, Mattes thought, was agreeing with his aching legs. But it didn’t agree with him. He wanted out, to run beneath the blue sky.
He wanted Sabine.
He had none of these.
In two days, they moved a small brass heater into his room. “Someone’s still looking out for you, traitor,” the Dog on duty sneered, and then spat. “Better than you deserve.”
There was a warm posset, as well, and he breathed in the fragrance of spiced Viviano apples. He didn’t touch it.
A letter arrived from Sabine, with the snows. The courier had marked it with the stamp of the hill country fiefs. So she was back in the hill country, he thought. He unfolded it carefully.
She’d written only one sentence. I am quite well, she said. And that was all he knew.

This was my favourite of this particular series. It read like a Neruda narrative or something.

I like the passing of time you've written, and how you've given little glimpses of his life and feelings. It's really tranquil, despite the subject, and I think that's nice.
