He’d expected to be executed, when they caught him. He’d tried to kill himself, he wasn’t sure from fear or shame, but Beka was too quick for him. They’d brought him back to Corus, hobbled and tossed over the back of a shaggy hill pony.
Lady Knight Sabine was silent the whole trip home. She said nothing, and refused to meet his eyes. She knelt by him on the last night, however. It was her turn on watch, and Beka and Farmer had gone to sleep in the same bedroll.
Mattes almost snorted. He supposed it was a good thing that someone got what they wanted.
“Why did you do it?”
“I told you,” he said, with a crooked smile. “They promised to make me a noble. We couldn’t have had a future together, elsewise. Your family wouldn’t have let you, not a commonborn hillman Dog.”
Sabine said, quietly, so quietly he knew her heart was breaking inside, “You never spoke to me. I’d have left it all behind.”
“You shouldn’t have to,” he said.
“It was my choice to make. You didn’t trust me enough.” She drew her sword, and sliced through his bonds in a swift motion. “Go. Before I change my mind.”
“My lady—”
Tears filled her eyes. “Never again.”
“Sabine. I’m not going.”
“You know the price for treason,” Sabine stated. He wasn’t noble, so he’d simply be strung up from the hangman’s tree. The others, however, would meet their ends on Traitor’s Hill. “Go. They’ll send a Hunt for you, but I’ll speak to Gershom and delay them for as long as I can.”
“There’s only one of us who betrayed a trust,” Mattes croaked. “Don’t make it both of us. I’m not leaving.”
She drew him close to her, ignoring the rough stubbly scratch of the beard that was beginning to grow, and his unwashed stink. “You stupid, stupid man,” she murmured, but she kissed him, and he held her, until the sun rose.
