Title: Custody
Rating: G
Word Count: 354
Pairing: Buri/Raoul
Round/Fight: 2B
Summary: A teacher must be found.
A/N: Part of my Adjustments series, in which Raoul is a late-bloomer and comes into his Gift later in life than most.
“I don’t know how you ever put up with those two,” says Buri, closing the door behind her. She’s still in her worn breeches and shirt from training all morning, hair pulled back tightly, but somehow manages not to look out of place in the antechamber of the king’s study.
“Have they decided yet?” Raoul asks.
“Yes. They actually drew straws.” She snorts. “Can you believe it? Anyway, Jonathan will be training you.”
“Ah, so Jon won?”
Her expression doesn’t change, but her silence is telling.
“Ouch,” he says.
“Don’t be a baby. They’ve both got duties of their own to deal with—”
“So do I!”
“—and the prospect of teaching you is daunting with good reason,” she finishes, ignoring his interruption. “It’s going to be difficult for both you and Jon. The Gift won’t come as naturally to you since you’ve been without it for so long, I’ll wager.”
It’s still difficult to wrap his mind around: he has the Gift. Him. At times he almost expects to look down and find himself with another limb, but in truth he hardly even notices it. It’s just there.
And perhaps that’s what makes it dangerous that he has no idea what he’s doing.
“You’re right,” he admits. “Reluctant teacher or not, something has to be done. I’d hate to wake up one morning to discover I’ve accidentally set my sheets on fire.” Or hurt someone. But he doesn’t need to state the obvious.
“Just don’t say as much around any of my trainees,” Buri warns. “They’ve got enough mad ideas of their own.”
Raoul raises his hands, defensively. “Cross my heart.”
The door to the king’s study opens outward, and Alanna emerges, looking smug. She walks over and claps Raoul on the shoulder. “Don’t worry. You’ll pick it up in no time. If Jon gives you any trouble, come see me, and we’ll organise a haunting or two.”
After she’s gone, Raoul looks at Buri with raised eyebrows. “And to think, you were worried about me causing trouble.”
Buri covers her eyes with a hand. “This is not going to end well.”
