Title: A New Boy Rating: PG Word Count: 221 Pairing: Dedicate Crane/Dedicate Lark/Dedicate Rosethorn Round/Fight: 1/B Summary: There's a new plant mage in the dormitories.
"Niko says there's a new lad in the dormitories with green magic."
Crane nodded. "And?"
"He'll be for Disciple, for certain. Apparently the lad's had a rough time of it and Niko says he's unaware of his power."
Crane's lips curled in distaste. "What kind of unschooled, illiterate boy are we talking about here, that he doesn't know of his ambient magic?"
"The sort who ends up in Discipline. Look, you'll need to take on the two Air Temple dedicates working with me. I won't have time."
"They can manage on their own, as long as you check their research on the crossbreeding and pollination studies. You know that."
"The lad's ten, Crane."
Laughter. "You told me, when we came back from Lightsbridge and found out what Lark was doing that you'd never take on a child. You can't stand them."
"Needs must. Will you take my two dedicates?"
"Yes. Thirty silver astrels says you have this boy hanging in the well inside a month."
"I won't." The temple bells began to ring and she sighed, climbing out of the bed. Crane took a moment to look at her and smiled.
"Tell that Lark of yours that she's a lucky woman."
"You like that sentimentality. You tell her. I've work to do."

Aaaah, this is lovely. I can't believe I've never seen a fic set in this particular moment, just into the first book, before. It never quite clicked for me, either, about Rose and Lark never having such young mages before, until now. Crane and Rosethorn's banter is wonderful, too.

Thanks. I think I'm stuck on the part of the story up until The Healing In The Vine where suddenly, Lark and Rosethorn are parents to four traumatised kids, rather than having people in their late teens and early 20's living there and how it affects all their lives and the relationship the three of them had.

Like Rosa, I'd never considered that Lark and Rosethorn hadn't taken on children before; I like this little snippet showing how Rosethorn is willing to move out of her comfort zone to teach Briar. And Crane, I wonder if you know Lark wasn't aware of her magic till she was an adult

Aw, this is so sweet. You have all of the characters so perfect. You did such an excellant job framing the moments right before we as the reader meets them.

I'm always intrigued by the "what ifs", so this look into the time just preceding Sandry's book is really great
