Title: Refuge Rating: G Word Count: 138 Pairing: Crane/Lark/Rosethorn Round/Fight: 1B Summary: Changes.
“It’s—” said Crane, the word hanging, apparently uncertain of what should follow. “It is,” Rosethorn agreed. She was barefoot in the front garden, though the term was hardly appropriate considering the yellowing grass and empty beds. Crane averted his eyes from her pale, sturdy ankles, and let himself focus instead on the cottage itself, its weathered roof and square windows. It was called Discipline. “Lark likes it,” said Rosethorn, leaning on the fence. “She says it needs care.” He refused a dinner invitation, politely, and returned to his greenhouse while the afternoon was still lingering. There was work to do, plants to monitor, notes to review. He kept himself occupied and applied himself where he was needed—until the light faded and stars flickered into life overhead—because it was easier than staying where he was not.

Mmm, I very much adore this fic. The transition between these two parts of Crane's and Rosethorn's lives creates such lovely tension.

This is so sweet. I love their differing thoughts on the garden, and of course, Lark likes it.

Oh no-- there's a lovely little tension between Rosethorn and Crane here, and it's almost melancholy. Lovely.

Oh, Crane. It's sad that, well, she's starting a new chapter of her life and Crane doesn't know how to be - doesn't think he can be - useful to her, so he finds his usefulness where he can.
