Title: Iconic
Rating: PG
Word Count: 445
Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan
Round/Fight: 1A
Summary: “You need to face her, Jon. She’s your captain.” An Avengers!AU.
Notes: A line has been taken directly from Marvel’s The Avengers (2012). This fic is best understood with assumed or working knowledge of the film. Also, apologies in advance to Coram. Lol.
The HUD screen only enhanced the patience on Thayet’s face. “Jon, you can’t keep hiding in the workshop forever.”
Jon inspected his project’s specifications, making a note to reinforce the second layer and have the scratched edges smoothed out. Core-M’s support strut bumped into his hip from behind, arm extended, and Jon automatically reached for the green smoothie. His bot remained, waiting, until Jon clinked his drink against the twitching claws in salute. Core-M chirped happily in reply before rolling away to the charging station.
“Jon, are you listening to me?”
“Always,” Jon assured, sending Thayet his most charming grin. “And since Conte Industries now has you as its lovely CEO, me spending time down here shouldn’t really be a big problem.”
Thayet ignored him. “You need to face her, Jon. She’s your captain.”
She’s also a disappointment. Growing up, Jon had worshipped the Lioness. Posters, comics, trading cards; Jon had it all, and more – even his father’s old photographs from Project Rebirth.
Thirty years later, and he couldn’t stand those piercing violet eyes, with their clear disapproval and fiery intensity. Jon Conte answered to no one, least of all to an outdated national hero. Trebond could take her old-fashioned morals and shove them elsewhere. Jon had better things to focus his energy on, namely being an engineering genius for a billion-dollar company and piloting the most advanced titanium-alloy suit in the world.
“Well, she didn’t seem very keen on having me on her team.”
“She liked Iron King just fine.”
Big man in a suit of armour. Take that away and what are you?
Jon almost laughed. Instead, he lifted the shield he was inspecting and tested its balancing weight. “Iron King, yes. But Jon Conte? Not so much.”
Thayet’s soft sigh carried through. Staring up into the HUD screen, he watched as she gave him a fond smile. He wondered what he’d ever do without her. “Just try,” she implored. “Captain Trebond woke up, only to find her whole world changed. Maybe she needs someone who has the guts to melt down those walls that even the ice couldn’t touch.”
Thayet’s knowing, wise smile made him squirm. Thayet was Thayet. She had more mettle and fortitude than he could ever hope to emulate.
Silenced, Jon brushed his fingers across the iconic gold cat. It was embedded, craftily and detailed, into crimson-painted vibranium. Some polish and a little Conte-engineered upgrading would make it perfect. He’d never worked with reds and golds before – the Iron King was blue and silver, after all – but he was Jon Conte, and he’d spent his entire life turning good things into something great.
This; this would be no different.
