Title: Lessons Rating: PG Word Count: 215 Pairing: Alanna/Jonathan Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: Alanna teaches her son lessons about life. -
It was hard explaining life to the bastard of a king; all the rules were different. A bastard was told he had no name and no future except that which he earned. A prince was promised the keys to the kingdom and the heavy weight of a crown. A noble boy was taught to lead and to follow, to trade and earn respect. But Mylo was all of these things at once, and none of them at all.
Alanna had to teach her boy that no one would respect him, but everyone would want something. She taught him that no one would see him, but he could never disappear. He would earn every bit of regard he was given twice over and still only have half that of lesser men. Alanna had to teach him, because no one else would.
But, sometimes, when the society seasons spun to a slow drift and the court settle itself for the long summers away from the palace, Alanna had a chance to teach her son something else.
That it didn’t matter what mistakes his parents made, or what the world saw them as; in the green grass of summer, he was just a little boy with a father who loved him every bit as much as his mother.

Oh my gosh, the last line.
I was all set up for this sad, tragic kind of fic, and then the ending hit me with a hundred soft, fluffy feelings with a slightly sad undertone...
I was not prepared. Not prepared at all.
OH JON. OH ALANNA. OH MYLO.
