Title: Wavespeaker Rating: G Prompt: Nature, #43 Summary: Miri's uncle, the wavespeaker, as a kid. Hello, he called gently. I'm back. He wished he could hear his whale-voice, and resignedly suspended himself to listen for the others. He spread his webbed fingers through the water, making him seem, to an outsider, like a drifting skeleton. Wavespeaker, he heard the leader saying. You must come to know us better. I will, the boy said, smiling. But I have to see you first. What if I get too attached? His elusive companion whistled the equivalent of a laugh. Like a lone mantis, singing to himself with no one there to hear it. You have to embrace us. We live as a group. We need each other. The wavespeaker blinked and resisted the urge to come up for air. I don't live in a group. I'm always alone. As if muted, colourful fish paddled by, kicking up the sand. A jarring sound of pain and pity reached his ears. If it was your choice to be this way, you must change, or you will go mad. The whale felt the wavespeaker's crushing loss of hope, and added, I know it wasn't your choice. Stay with us. Undecided, ongoing chimes shook the anemones at his feet. I don't know. I can't be here forever. I'll visit you, if I can. Quietly he ventured, What do you look like? The long grasses parted, swaying in the current. Without preamble, a beautiful, black eye filled his vision. Blue-gray folds of skin protected it, letting water slide off its lid like pebbles by the river. Tiny, fine eyelashes tickled his arm. You're - gorgeous. His hands lay limp with wonder. Thank you, she chuckled, in her way. Come tomorrow. Ride on my back. Her eye twinkled. You can be a barnacle for the day. Love to, the wavespeaker said, and saluting humbly, broke the surface with a push of his flippers.

This is so cool, Hawks! Very atmospheric, especially your description of the whale's eye.

Thanks, mistrali! I kind of took liberty with the description, since I don't think whales have eyelashes...

This hurt me and then made me smile and gah. I liked this. WHY HAVE I NEVER SEEN ANYONE WRITE ABOUT THIS PERSON? Everything in this is now head-canon accepted, btw.
My two favourite bits:
"I don't live in a group. Stay with us."
and
"You can be a barnacle for the day."
