Series: New and Old (Kel/Roald)
Title: Mother
Rating: G
Event: Drama Discus
Words: 436
Summary: Sometimes Liano could be a handful, bu she was always a blessing.
“You are not my mother!” The first time Liano yelled the words, she was fourteen and furious she would not be allowed to ride alone through the woods alone with her suitor. She slammed the door to her chambers and Kel did not approach.
Roald went to knock on the door, but Kel stopped him with a soft hand on his arm and a knowing smile. “Let her calm down, let her breath and fume. Then I’ll talk to her.” He seemed distraught, that his daughter would speak in such a way, but he smiled slowly and shook his head.
“I will never pretend to understand you two.” He kissed Kel lightly and left her straighten out the mess, happy that at least one of the two knew how to deal with a hormonal teenage daughter.
An hour later Kel returned to the girl's room with a tray form the kitchen she had prepared herself and knocked quietly on the young girl's door. Liano opened it eyes down, the very picture of dissatisfied and regretful teenager. “Want to talk about this?” Liano stood aside, allowing Kel to settle the tray on her bedside.
A pot of the girl’s favorite Jasmine tea. A plate of the pretty almond cookies they both used to eat at her tea parties. And a plate of a sweet rice dish with sliced mango, one of Shinko’s from back home. They nibbled and sipped without really speaking much, though the young girl’s back relaxed and she was willing to look at Kel directly, instead of through her bangs.
“Remember when I was eight and we took a picnic up to that hill? You told me how you and Mother went there, I mean, before.”
“You’ve always loved me, just like she did. But I can’t really remember her much anymore. Not her voice, or her smell or…” And for a split second, she wasn’t the beautiful young woman that she had become, but Kel’s best friend’s terrified little daughter, and so much her own little girl, crying herself to sleep because her mommy wasn’t there to kiss her good night.
For the next few hours, the two sat, telling stories of Shinko, before and after she came to Tortall. “You look so much like her, you know.” Kel reached out a hand, pushing a telltale lock of raven black hair behind the familiar little shell of an ear.
There were tears in the girl’s eyes and for a split second, “I really didn’t mean it, you know.” Liano looked up, nibbling on a cookie “You’re the finest mother I could have had.”
