Series: Independence Title: The Fruit Stand Rating: G Event: Light-hearted Long Jump Words: 219 Summary: Dove decides she needs a new way to listen to her people's voices.
A young woman with red hair stands in the marketplace, observing the people. She walks up to a fruit stand selling all kinds of exotic fruits.
“Hello. Welcome to Heiko’s Fruit Stand. May I help you?” a lady wearing a plain brown dress asked.
“I know it’s you Dove. How long did you think you could fool me for?” the woman at the stand asked, adjusting the baby on her hip.
“Longer than a day,” Dove replied bitterly, adjusting the headscarf hiding her hair.
“It’s not safe for you to be out with no guards. Did you really think you weren’t watched at all times by your spies?” Aly asked.
“I thought the darkings were your only direct source of information on me so leaving them behind would leave me free to explore,” Dove explained. “I thought you would understand. You always are encouraging me to be curious.”
“You decided to explore and satisfy your curiosity by getting a job? What happened to your walks around the city?” Aly asked her queen.
“People started acting a bit strangely around me. There’s a difference between the being the future queen and the reigning monarch with the power to put all the people in jail. And how else do you get to listen to gossip from all types of different people?”

Ooh, I love this: There’s a difference between the being the future queen and the reigning monarch with the power to put all the people in jail.

I love how innovative, yet simple the idea of getting a job is for Dove.

Ah, this seems so Dove-like! It's great dialogue!

I love that you've made this such an "issue" when it wouldn't be otherwise seen as a problem...and the insight Dove has here is very her! I loved how you ended it.
