Summary: What if another Yamani Princess was found?
What if Kel had refused?
What if no Bride was found?
What if Jon found a girl from another country?
After the Shinko’s death, Jon did what he did best: found a marriage for his child. He spoke with the Emperor and was given a wonderful proposal, his second daughter: a stern, strong new widow of forty two. When she arrived, it was with a straight back and a distant gaze. When they met it was a quiet, awkward experience that none of them really enjoyed. Years later, as Kel set at tea with the woman years later she asked how the cool woman had come to feel about her husband and her marriage.
“The key is we don’t feel.”
“No”. It was harsh. Quick. Without thought but driven by feeling. It wasn’t something she did, acting by her heart rather than her head.
“Kelardy, it’s the only way. The treaty will decay without a marriage into kind feelings that are forgotten in a few years. You’re the only bride both sides will support.”
“The treaty will decay? What about my life? My love? My shield? I’m useless as a queen, but everything as a knight.”
“But, Kel,” Ilean interjected, “Tortall, and the Isles, need you. Please, darling..”
“ Mama, please don’t make me do this.”
And they did not.
Before Pier’s could even object to the proposal, the Emperor flatly refused. No suitable bride could be found and Piers and Ilean were sent home without a marriage to bind the treaty. It only took three years before the Isles made complaints about the closing of mainland ports and the Tortallian’s noted new, and well equipped, pirates on their coast. Five years and war was imminent,. Six and the Pages and Squires were trained in Naval tactics. In only eight years, war was formally declared. In only ten, Keldary of Mindalen was dead with a Yamani arrow in her chest.
It only took three months after her death before Jon started began searching for a new marriage. Though no Yamani bride could be found, another foreign noble took her place. The boat arrived and she was rushed to the palace, in a swirl of silk and roses that made her eyes spin and her escorts worry about their charge. When she arrived, the hall was opened again, the black hangings removed and bright colors hung in their place. As she bowed before Roald, the deep intonation of her Raka escort carried across the hall: “May I introduce Lady Petranne Balitang?”
