Series: New and Old (Kel/Roald)
Title: Warmth
Rating: PG
Event: 400 Word Dash
Words: 400
Summary: After a long campaign, nothing was better than feeling at home.
It had been a hard fight to even get back out in the field. Even now, it was only with the Ladies and leading a group or two of the Riders that she was allowed to use the fighting skills she had trained over the years. It was better, though, than never seeing the countryside from horseback again.
It felt good, fulfilling, to be where she belonged. Raiders had been moving up and down the Hill Country, destroying villages and leaving even those least affected without the food that would be needed come winter. Three groups had been sent out to round up the trouble makers.
Now, six weeks later, they had brought the worst offenders to the courts and were headed back to Corus. Independent of the enjoyment Kel took from the work, she was bone tired and soaked through. The rain that had been continuous for over a week and turned into a driving storm about six miles out of the city,
She almost just stayed in the barracks, so desperate was she for a bed. But instead, she made her way back to the Royal wing and allowed herself in with a nod to the guards. Entering the suite, she changed and made her way straight to bed. At least the rain had washed off the mud. Slipping into bed beside Roald, she curled into a ball and shivered herself to sleep in minutes.
For once she slept late, until after the sun crept through the curtains. At some point in the night, they had gravitated towards each other, until her back was firmly pressed against his chest and his arm was wrapped around his waist.
Kel smiled. If she had been told three years ago that “home” would be defined by the arms of her Prince, she would have laughed. Now she only moved closer, loosening her hand hold and turning into his arms burying her face in his chest and his scent.
She had hoped not to wake him, but as he kissed the crown of her head she was glad she had. The smile on his face when she looked up was as bright as the sun through the bleach white curtains. “I missed you.” He said, voice still gravely with sleep.
Kel repeated the statement, before leaning in for her first kiss in over a month. It was good to finally be warm.
