Series: Mirror, Darkly Title: Dead Man's Armor Rating: G Event: 110H Words: 110 Summary: AU, Roger returns to Tortall after Queen Lianne's death to put his plans in motion, only to find the country unexpectedly changed.
-
Roger found himself in wrapped in laconic dissonance with the world, oddly numb to the turnings of the day. Shock, he supposed, though he’d experienced it so rarely to assume immunity. Foolishness, he realized, was a blinding chink in any man’s armor.
His uncle was dead.
On the docks, as his ship pulled ashore, a gleaming company of the Own awaited his arrival. But, instead of an honor guard, his young cousin, a man barely grown, sat with a crown set firmly on his brow.
He left Carthak expecting to weave his plans through the hands of an ailing king, only to find himself the minder of a hale one.

Man these reverse hurdles are fun to read. This is lovely -- I'm particularly fond of the phrase "laconic dissonance".

It's Roger and his egotistical use of pretentious words.

Oh my GOD, how did you make this reverse hurdle thing work SO AMAZINGLY WELL? I demand you write ALL your fics like this! Seriously, you can read it backwards or forwards and you know deep down Roger is still the bad guy yet you kind of ache for him. Love it!
