Title: Birdsong Rating: G Word Count: 157 Card: Summer Bingo: (Sun + Sweat + Outdoors + Trees + Somewhere New) Summary: Gorse/Berenene-ish. Far, far, pre-WotE. Sort of in the same universe as Wish For A Full Moon, if anyone's interested.
His Emperor disliked him enough to order him into a land of ice and snow. (And so much mud. How he longed for the spices and oils of the kitchen.)
But Namorn had proved... welcoming. Courtiers no longer whispered in Kurchali (which would never fall easily from his tongue). The youngest princess had even become a friend.
"Not so much mud in summer," she murmured, dark eyes twinkling, for he had not voiced his complaints. She lifted the hem of her gown out of the way as she hopped over a fallen log: the unessential princess. A mask she'd shattered during their chess matches. "Because yes, Ambassador, despite your fears, we do have summer too."
He had never previously walked the paths of her father's garden, so followed. Birdsong fluttered from the surrounding trees. Despite the shade cast by their long boughs, he found he was sweating.
The emperor, he thought with satisfaction, had once again miscalculated.

Oh, god, I love the Wish for a full moon universe, and so this is absolutely wonderful to read. You bring a lovely warmth to both of them, while keeping Berenene's intrinsic power ("the unessential princess." Ha!). I also adore this take on the seasonal prompt.

Whoops. That was supposed to say 'quintessential'... but in a surprising twist, 'unessential' works as well. How strange.
Someone on GL has actually read WfafM? I am in shock. I'm glad you enjoyed both that fic and this ficlet, though.

Ahhh, Gorse/Berenene!! I love that he's an ambassador; it gives him so much interesting backstory.

When you know as little about someone as we do Gorse, and yet have this strange conviction that he's a total badass, the only solution is to make things up.

Gorse being a badass is totally cannon.
I love this unlikely, yet surprisingly sweet, interaction.
