Title: Things Passing In The Night Rating: PG-13 Wordcount: 250 Summary: Certain questions come up when your lover is the Empress. Warning for a bit of sexuality.
His fingers trail over her hip, feather-light, and splay outwards. His grip digs into her skin somewhat, leaves white marks, and Berenene rolls away.
"Don't," she says to Quen, looking at him over her shoulder. "Now not."
He raises an eyebrow. "We're in bed, empress. There couldn't be a better time."
"I mean it." She slaps his hand just enough to sting.
"Right," Quen exhales on a low breath. "Whatever you want, your majesty."
She rolls her eyes where he can't see. "Don't be like that, Quenaill." The it's irritating me goes unsaid.
There's a rustle and she can feel him moving away from her. "I won't, then."
She could fix this easily: slip a hand under the sheets and search for warm flesh, but she won't. "Is something troubling you? Tell me."
"You won't care for it," he says stiffly.
Berenene's mouth twists. "Try."
Quen sighs. "Princess Anerinne."
"What of her?"
"She'll be six in a fortnight."
Berenene's mouth twists. "Yes, she will. Don't worry, you are invited to the celebration."
"I can count, majesty. The first time we were together, when I was younger and new to your service... is she mine?"
There is no response.
"Nena, she has my eyes."
When she finally speaks, her voice is cool. "What does it matter to you? Either way you split it, I'm not going to tell you."
"I know," Quen mutters. There's noise at her back; there is movement and missing warmth and he is gone from her bed.

First off: the conversation and every bit of dialogue in it had spot-on characterization, made me laugh at their wit and then go 'aww' at their disagreements. I loved the tension in it.
I think my favourite parts were the subtext of their actions: Quen pulling away, Berenene slapping at him, the silence. Or am I reading too much into it?
