Title: Fickle
Rating: PG
Couple/Character: Kel/Neal
Event: 400 Word Dash
Words: 400
Summary: Kel had always been fickle, except of course when she actually wanted to be.
Kel had always known that she was rather fickle. Not in the general sense. No, she was only fickle in one way and it was a constant source of embarrassment for her, even if only to herself. Kel often found herself falling in and out of love. As a page she had fancied Neal, her best friend. As a squire she had fancied both Dom and Cleon, and as a Knight she had fancied Dom. But now she found herself once again in love with someone else, she had gone full circle back to Neal.
It felt different this time, and she couldn’t quite put her finger on how. When she saw him with Yuki her stomach burned unpleasantly and she found herself being rather less then charitable towards her. When she was alone with Neal she found herself getting tongue tied, which was completely uncharacteristic for her. Even when she had been a page with her crush on Neal she had never had problems speaking to him. She longed for him, in a way she never had for anyone else. She couldn’t stand to be around him, and at the same time she could not bear to be away from him.
She hated it. She was a grown woman, level headed and sensible. Kel certainly didn’t have room in her life for such things. Especially if feeling this way meant that her social skills when in Neal’s company would morph into something fitting for a twittering twelve year old convent girl. Of course she was probably being too hard on herself; after all if anyone had noticed her sudden lack normal behavioural patterns they certainly hadn’t mentioned it.
Kel was determined to have things go back to normal. She tried to be around Neal as little as possible without being too obvious, she had hoped that if she could go long enough without seeing him that her feelings would dissipate or lessen. But he always seemed to pop up, and she could never bring herself to turn him down. Every time he asked her to help him pick out a gift for Yuki, or play chess, she fell a little harder.
So that day when Neal asked her if she would stand up for him at his wedding, she fell so far that she finally hit the ground. She knew that there would be no getting up from this.
