Title: Goodbye, Lark Rating: PG Word Count: 208 Pairing: Lark/Rosethorn Round/Fight: 1/B Summary: Rosethorn says goodbye in a way that only she can. character death
“It’s too early,” said Rosethorn, staring at the freshly overturned earth.
“It’s always too early,” Sandry replied, tears streaming down her face.
“There,” Rosethorn said, placing the wreath of flowers on top of Lark’s grave. “They mean something. I taught her once- she’ll remember; I know she will.”
“They’re flowers.”
“They mean something.” Rosethorn pointed to the small flower on the edge. “That’s a marigold. It means grief. Traders think it’s the flower of the dead.”
Sandry looked down. “What’s that one mean?” she asked pointing to a tiny white and yellow cluster of flowers.
“It means devotion. I thought Lark would like it,” Rosethorn said. “The violet ones mean thankfulness.”
“That’s appropriate,” Sandry said, furiously wiping away tears. “I’m thankful she was my foster-mother.”
“I’m thankful she loved me.”
For a moment they were silent, tears quickly welling in Rosethorn’s eyes until Sandry tugged her hand. “What’s a snowdrop for?” she asked, trying to keep her tone neutral.
“Hope,” Rosethorn said softly. “And that pink one, it’s a special type of rose. It means a wound that needs to heal. I thought it was right for……us.”
“I think so too.”
Rosethorn leaned down and brushed the flowers that lay against the new grave.
“Goodbye, Lark.”

It's hard to write in words how sad and hopeful this is.

“I’m thankful she loved me.” I didn't think something just a spot longer than 200 words could make me almost cry, but here I am, surprised as heck. Beautiful piece. I love that it's between Rosethorn, Sandry and an absent Lark.

I agree with ev; "sad and hopeful" is the perfect way to describe this. And Rosethorn and Sandry interaction is something we don't see enough of in either canon or fandom.
