Title: Leather Volume Shelves Rating: PG Wordcount: 201 Pairing: Team Girl Power (Buri/Thayet) Round: 1/B Summary: Buri wonders who she is now. (Italicized text is quoted from the song "Book of Love" by Dar Williams and excluded from word count.)
We pour through the passages The leather volume shelves But they only leave us wondering Can we find ourselves
“You won’t find me in there,” Thayet says, voice bright with amusement — though I can see the tension in her shoulders. “My father’s family was not in power long, and my mother wasn’t even noble, as you reckon it. We have no ties outside of Sarain.”
“Even so, highness, the Priest of Mithros requested that I perform a thorough inquiry.” The archivist taps the scroll, which is dripping with official-looking seals, as opulent as everything else in our new life.
“And I have to be here while you search,” she murmurs.
“It’s customary,” he answers. “Can’t be too careful with these things — look at the Copper Isles.”
We both shudder a little at that, remembering the vindictive and unsound princess who taunted Thayet when we first came to the palace. Was it too many generations of intermarrying, or something else, that made her like that?
The archivist opens the royal genealogy.
We might remain in K’Miri songs, the two of us, but our offspring will not be part of the tribes. Instead her children will be remembered, written down, important in this land.
And mine, if I one day have them? Who will they be?

I love how you can get into her head. You write first person better than anyone I know, I sometimes think. Your voices are always clear, and Buri's is unmistakable here. And I love the Copper Isles reference, and the determined-almost-to-idiocy quality of the archivist

*blushes* Thank you -- you give compliments better than anyone I know. *grin*

God, this is incredible. It's not only well-written, but it's the kind of idea I would've never dreamed up, and haven't seen anyone come close to. Perfect.
