I almost grin when I shoot a brief glance over at Clary. She’s scrunched up into a corner of the car, while Nathan and Darren are prattling on and on about the teambuilding seminar we’re all heading for. I’d have preferred to make the journey with Yoav and Nyler. At least Yoav doesn’t talk people’s heads off.
And Nyler’s trained Clary, or so I’ve heard. She served out her rookie period with him.
I figure Clary’s rubbed off on me when we trade almost identical annoyed glances as Darren goes on and on.
“Last year was something of a personal revelation. We were doing an exercise called "Team Builders," where we were given two minutes to build a tower out of ordinary office furniture,” Darren’s saying, “When I stood on Nate's shoulders and I put that electric pencil sharpener on top of the pile, we both knew - we could never have done it alone.”
I groan inwardly. Clary is mouthing at me, “Kill me now.”
I guess it’s only good that neither of us are actually saying it.
“You ever been to one of those seminars, Agent Tunstall?”
I try to deflect the conversation before Clary gets distinctly murderous. It’s difficult; I’m feeling that way myself. “Uh…I think I went for a constructive problem-solving course when I first joined…”
“Oh, did you play the game where you can’t use any negative words? It’s so hard not to use the word ‘but’!”
“I’m having that same problem myself,” Clary says, very dryly. I’m admiring her restraint, and guessing that it won’t last through the next four hours of the roadtrip. Her sarcasm is lost on N and D. I grin at her; she narrows her eyes in a sharp glare.
I’m going to pay for it later, I know.
But that’s teamwork for you. “Say, do you think there’s a gas station anywhere nearby?” I ask, with false enthusiasm. “I think I need to go.”
The relief on Clary’s face is definitely very welcome. Sometimes, I think, as I listen to the other two agents quarrel about personal responsibility and going at the last stop before a long roadtrip, sometimes, you just have to take one for the team.
That’s what teamwork is about.
