KM R3: Those Who Serve (6), PG-13
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 417
Pairing: Kel/Maura
Round/Fight: 3/B
Warnings: Incredibly mild references to sex. Kind of. Really just PG-13 for safety.
Summary: Those that serve often have a different perspective on things.
Tian can believe what she likes, but I never fancied myself in love with Lady Kel. She was many things to me - Sister, protector, teacher, savior - but I never wanted “lover” to be added in. She was much too rough, too hard and aggressive. Always coming home black and blue, beaten and bleeding and grinning at her successes. Always after me to learn this hold or that throw... I wanted someone quiet and sweet to share my bed with. Someone gentle.
I didn’t even really like Lady Kel when I first met her. She was so impassive, so cold. I thought for the longest time that she didn’t like me, or that she just didn’t care about anything. And yet, there she was - battling older, stronger lads in defense of the younger ones. Feeding sparrows. Taking in stray mongrels - four and two footed alike.
Those she’s touched - we’d do anything for her. Just ask Tobe, or Jump, or Peachblossom. Just ask me.
I don’t always have the best judgment when it comes to people I love, but I never thought that Duchess was good enough for her. Tian would say that I was being a goose, and tease me about being so fearsome a protector for such a brawny knight, but what does she know about Lady Kel? My Lady may hold a lance better than most, but she doesn’t know the first thing about defending her heart. Why else would she put up that mask of hers? It’s the only way she knows to shield herself.
I was happy for Lady Kel for a while. It was good to see her relax some, to find so kindred a spirit. It made me giggly for her, remembering the early days of my courtship with Tian. Somehow, I doubted it was My Lady that initiated it, and that tickled me something fierce, that big strong knight as nervous as a first year squire. The Duchess seemed to care for her so deeply... But Uncle and Tian were worried, and Salma too.
I suppose I often choose optimism in the face of reality.
Lady Kel must have clung to that offer of the Isles, and a position as ambassadors for both of them. But really, what else could have happened? The Duchess had to make a match that was good for her Fief, and Lady Kel could never love someone that shirked their duty just to avoid unpleasantness. Didn’t she prove that when she came after me?
