Title: Missed Opportunity Series: Opening Lines Rating: G Word Count: 188 Pairing: Maura/Kel Fight: 3/B Summary: Sometimes the chance doesn’t arise. Based on the opening line of “Moby Dick”, by Herman Melville.
“Call me Kel,” the taller girl murmurs. Her voice is low, but lacks the lilt Maura had expected. She knows the girl’s mother, after all, and had expected something more musical.
“It’s been so long since we last met,” Maura observes. “You’ve changed much since you were – what? Thirteen?”
Kel nods. “I’m bigger.”
“And a knight. It’s a shame we didn’t cross paths during the Progress – but Douglass tells me you were squire to Lord Raoul. He avoids such things, doesn’t he?”
She nods again, a smile coming to her full mouth. “We made several of the stops, of course – the king demanded it – but Raoul did his best to avoid what we could.”
“The king does make unfortunate demands, doesn’t he?” Maura hopes that Kel can hear the jest in her voice. This assignment to Dunlath was at the king’s insistence, after all.
“If I’m to train your men, though,” Kel replies, her voice all business and no pleasure, “I should probably begin sooner than later. Show me to the barracks?”
With a shrug, Maura does so. She’s not one to dwell on what might have been.

Aah, Kel, you know not what you are missing This is stunning, though - how Maura expects and Kel doesn't deliver.
