Title: Failure Rating: G Word Count: 196 Pairing: Crane/Rosethorn Round/Fight: 1/F Summary: After a setback while working on the Human Essences project, Rosethorn is feeling demoralized
Crane watched Rosethorn as she looked over her notes. Although she stared at the same page for half and hour, he didn’t think she was paying particular attention to detail. Shirking her duty as Miss Advocate for Healthy Bedtimes, she was up past midnight, and was going a little cross-eyed, he noticed with a slight smirk.
At moments like this, Crane enjoyed analyzing Rosethorn’s behavior. She always had to have her own way, so she took failure hard. After the spectacular disaster today, she wouldn’t be able to sleep if she wanted to. All she was able to do was sit and pretend to read over old scribbles. She was so tired, she wasn’t even snapping at him.
Crane bent over his own paper to cross out an illegible annotation, and created an inkblot that started to spread. As he hurried to save his notes, he refused to admit to thinking that he was so tired that he wasn’t snapping at her. He also was most certainly not thinking of Dedicate Snowdrop’s words from earlier that day:
“Crane, Rosethorn, your approach to deriving infant essences is too flawed to continue. We will have to start over.”

I love how they're so much alike, and how he won't really face that.

Oh, the parallelism is wonderful, and I love how you build up to the last line. I'm so glad you're ficcing the essence derivation; it's an aspect of their relationship and the Emelan canon in general that has always fascinated me.

Awww. Poor kids.
I am fascinated by the essence project, and so I'm glad you chose to write about it.
