A glance, aimed sideways from the corner of his eye, flicking over her countenance-- judging, almost, or taking the score. One or the other, in search of equivalent ground.
“You’re never going to like me, are you.” It is a statement, not a question.
Her eyes are even; her voice cool. “No,” the lady knight says, pushing a lock of hair out of her face. “I’m afraid I won’t.”
“I see,” the king says, not angry, just contemplative. He’d been hoping for something better than hatred, but some wins are losses. “Well, it’s always good to know where one stands.”
She laughs, surprised. “If I may be so bold in my response, sire.”
“I appreciate the honestly,” he says, smiling. “Thank you.”
It is her turn to slide over an astonished look. “You’re... welcome?”
“Like I said,” he murmurs. “Respect is the least I can ask for.”
“You have that.” Their eyes meet, and she smiles briefly. “I promise you my loyalty.”
It is more than acceptable.
