Title: Mourning (Love and Necessity I)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 316
Pairing: Kel/Jon
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: While Tortall mourns it’s queen, Gary helps Jon to see what he needs to do – even when it’s not what he wants to do.
Warning: Character death
A/N: So this is the start of my series Love and Necessity. I hope you like it!
The queen was dead. The people of Tortall mourned with their king, for she had been dearly loved by all. In the nursery, the healers fussed over the premature child she had birthed, for after two miscarriages this was the only heir. The nation waited, holding it’s breath, but less than a week after the death of the queen, Tortall mourned the loss of her child. The king sank into a sadness so deep that no one could convince him to speak. His people respected that.
But they also worked. Jonathan of Conté had no siblings, no children, and now no queen. Should anything happen to him, there was no clear successor. He needed a queen who could give him an heir, but they knew he wouldn’t remarry anytime soon, if ever.
Two years later…
“Jon, you have to get married. You need an heir!”
“I have no interest in another marriage, Gary. You know that.”
“I know, but Jon-”
“Leave off, Gary. Bothering him about it isn’t going to change his mind.”
“Raoul, you know as well as I do that he needs an heir.” The large man shrugged, admitting that but remaining silent. Gary sighed. “Jon, I know this has been tough for you. I can’t even imagine what I would do if Cythera died. But-”
“You don’t know how I feel!” Jon burst out, rising to his feet. Gary stared at him calmly, and the king of Tortall sighed and sat back down. “You’re right, Gary. I know I need an heir. I just can’t imagine anyone replacing Thayet.”
Gary sat down next to his friend, placing a hand on his shoulder. “You’re not replacing her, Jon.” Gary told him. “Thayet would want you to be happy. She would know you needed to do this.”
Jon sighed. “I know.”
Gary smiled. “And I’ve found a wonderful noble lady for you. Her name is Keladry of Mindelan.”
