Title: Sad Reality (Love and Necessity VI)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 333
Pairing: Kel/Jon
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: Gary questions Jon about his not-yet-official fiancé, and Jon questions Gary about Kel’s choice in the matter.
A/N: Okay, so Jon is a little OOC from how he is in the books (PotS, at least), but I think he would be a little concerned about being in an arranged marriage too. I hope Gary doesn’t seem harsh – I just see it as he knows what Jon has to do, even if Jon doesn’t.
“So, how do you like her?” Gary’s voice was cheerful as Jon sat down across from him in the king’s apartments.
“Keladry?” The question was pointless, Jon knew, but he wanted to stall. His oldest friend, however, saw right through him, and merely nodded in response. Jon sighed. “I don’t know how I like her,” Jon told him honestly. “We danced a few times at the party last week, and she seems nice enough, but how can I know if I like her when I don’t even really know her?”
“Well, you can’t expect to get to know her from a few parties,” Gary pointed out obviously.
Jon glared at him. “I know that – that’s what I’m saying! But what chances am I going to have to get to know her besides a few parties? It’s not like there’s a war going on and propriety has gone out the window – if I spend any more time with her than a few dinners, people will start to wonder, regardless of whether or not she’s my fiancé.” He sighed, slumping down in his chair. “Sometimes I hate this.” His brow furrowed, and he suddenly sat up straighter. “Is she my fiancé officially yet?” He asked his advisor.
“Officially, no, although an arrangement has been made with her parents. Once you both decide that you want to go through with it, she will be introduced as your fiancé. Of course, that is mostly your decision.”
Jon frowned at his friend. “She has no choice in whether or not she wants to marry a widower over ten years her senior?”
“You are the king, so no. It would be more her parent’s decision than hers anyway – they have made it clear that they will support her decision if she decides not to do it, though.” At Jon’s shocked look, Gary sighed. “Don’t look at me – I don’t make these rules! That’s just the sad reality of the situation.”
Jon turned away, frowning. “Yes,” he mused, “it is.”
