“Thayet never liked Kenny Loggins,” Jon said quietly. His eyes were closed, and he was lying back against the couch. They were still pressed uncomfortably close together, but when Kel made a move to shift to a more reasonable distance, his eyes snapped open, and he fixed her with a pleading stare. “Don’t,” he said, maybe commanded. Kel wondered what would happen if she shifted, but changed her mind.
“I don’t listen to much music,” she offered, instead.
“I know,” Jon said. He closed his eyes again, and his lips parted in a quiet sigh. “She preferred love ballads, you know. Bands like Chicago. She listened to them more and more when things got worse. I listened to Kenny Loggins.”
“And grew the beard.”
His lips twitched in a smirk. “Yes. And grew the beard.”
“What happened?” Kel asked. She regretted it almost as soon as she’d asked. It wasn’t any of her business, really, whatever had happened between Jon and Thayet. And yet they all knew Thayet was gone. The way Jon had made it sound…Kel refused to finish the thought, but her traitorous brain threw the idea at her anyway. He’d made it sound as if things weren’t working out, long before Thayet had left. Long before Thayet had been missing, presumed dead.
“She was lovely,” Jon said, and the pain in his voice showed briefly on his features. He didn’t open his eyes, just turned his head in her direction. “I’m not being fair to her, am I? Everything I say, everything I’m thinking…she was lovely. She was beautiful. I loved her then, and I still love her. I feel like I’m giving myself a reason to hate her, and I’m not being fair. I’m blaming her as much as I blamed myself for all of this.” He waved his hand vaguely at the empty, neatly-ordered apartment all around them.
Kel swallowed. She wasn’t too sure how she was supposed to deal with this. Instead, she reached for Jon’s hand and pressed it lightly. The silence stretched between them, but it wasn’t an awkward silence. It was the first time Jon had spoken so openly about his past with Thayet. She didn’t know if it was going to be the last.
