Title: Waiting (Love and Necessity X)
Rating: PG
Word Count: 300
Pairing: Kel/Jon
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: Jon waits for a response from Kel – will they be married or not?
Two weeks ago, Jon had asked Kel if he could introduce her officially as his fiancé. Although the arrangement had been made between the crown and Kel’s parents, either one of them still could have chosen to back out. But after she consented, and he introduced her to the court as his future bride and queen, they would start planning the wedding.
She still hadn’t said yes. Not that she had said no, either – she hadn’t said anything except that she needed more time to think. She hadn’t even told him she was unsure or that she needed more time to get to know him – just more time to think. Gary had urged him to ask her again if she’d made up her mind, or to give him an ultimatum, but Jon had refused.
“I’m asking her a lot as it is,” he’d said. “I’m not going to force her to make a decision.”
“And what if she says no?” Gary had responded. “We can’t waste time on this, Jon.”
“A few weeks aren’t going to make or break whether or not I have an heir, Gary,” Jon had told him. When Gary looked ready to reply, he’d invoked the royal power he so rarely used. “End of discussion,” he’d said, and his advisor hadn’t argued.
But Jon wondered. Was she ever going to give him a response? She had to eventually, of course – eventually Gary would demand a response from Kel himself. Jon smiled to think of that confrontation, but quickly returned to frowning. It wouldn’t come to that – would it?
Kel liked spending time with him, he knew, and she’d grown more accustomed to the idea that marrying him would make her queen, although she still hadn’t entirely acquiesced to it, but what else was she waiting for?
