Title: Marriage and Other Deterrents (Love and Necessity VIII)
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 297
Pairing: Kel/Jon
Round/Fight: 1/F
Summary: Kel reflects on her future with Jon.
They were going riding. Jon – she had permission to call him that now, although she rarely worked up the nerve to do so out loud – had been thrilled when he found out that she enjoyed riding and had gifted her with a horse he’d dubbed Peachblossom. He seemed relieved that they had something in common, even though they’d been getting along better ever since Kel’s slip-up at the dinner table. She’d called the courtiers vipers – something that was acceptable, normal even, to think but not to say out loud – and while she’d been mortified at the time she now saw that it had been a good thing.
At least they had been dining privately when it happened, she mused, and smiled. Such a breach of propriety would have been much less appropriate if anyone had overheard her.
“What’s so funny?” Jon asked, looking at her sidelong from where he rode next to her.
Kel smiled. “Nothing.”
He smirked, aware that she wasn’t telling him what she was thinking but alright with letting it lie, and Kel smiled wider. She found that she was actually enjoying spending time with Jon now – she could see herself doing it a lot more in the future, although her mind shied away from thinking of them married, because there were things you had to do when you were married that she’d never even thought about and that she couldn’t seem to desire with the kind, almost brotherly figure Jon was to her now. Things that would have to be done quite soon if they married, because he needed an heir.
An heir – the other reason she didn’t want a marriage. Because a marriage to Jon would involve a coronation, and Kel was still quite certain that she never wanted to be queen.
