"He liked you, I think." Haname paced the floor in an uncharacterstic show of anxiety. "I saw him glance at you, and he had this expression--"
"I wonder if he recognized me," Kel mused, tongue between her teeth. "Or if he's only heard stories."
"He's the king," the Yamani spymistress said, flapping a hand. "It is probably both."
"True." Kel had advanced to chewing her lip. "But what Jonathan suspects something, or he's heard word? The Whisper Man is at least as good with information as we are, possibly better. That will make my job so much harder."
"Relax." Haname tapped Kel lightly with her fan. "We are not out to remove him, just gain information we would not have otherwise. And I have decided-- I think that Jonathan's smirking at you when we docked was a sign of interest in you, nothing for to worry over. Exploit his interest, Keladry, and the Yamani Emperor will be pleased at a job well done."
"I know what to do about the man himself," Kel murmured. "I'm uneasy when things appear overly simple, you know that."
"It's a good suspicion to have," Haname replied. "Stop fretting. You are my best agent, and you know the ways of strong men like I know the back of my hand. You will succeed. Now. Have we decided what you are wearing to the ball? I think it should be something form-fitting."
"Anything to help me catch the eye of the king," Kel said, eyes crinkling at the corners. If Jonathan's interest had been piqued, however momentarily, it would be her chore to keep it.
