Title: Tilting
Rating: PG
Length: 446 words
Competitor: Wyldon
Round/Fight: A/1
Summary: Tilting is a common thing in Cavall.
“Hold that shield higher and grip your lance tighter.” Wyldon lowered his own lance and nudged Heart into position.
“Yes sir, Father!” Lancelot did as his father instructed and put Cherry blossom at the starting mark. His mother made sure they were both ready and yelled “Go!”
Lance almost lost his courage when he saw his father, the best jouster in the eastern, western, northern, or southern lands, riding at a full charge at him. But he remembered that his mother, also an incredible jouster, had managed to hold her own against him.
He kept his lance in the right position and smashed into his father. Then he was flying. The next thing in his mind was thump. Thump hurt, a lot. Wyldon dismounted to check on his son and Keladry ran over too. Lance sat up on his own and watched his mother hit his father over the head with her fan.
“You said you weren’t going to unhorse him!”
“I did not intend to, his seat was bad.” Wyldon extended a hand, which Lance took, and pulled his boy up. “You need to work on that if you plan to be in any tournaments.”
“Yes Father! Can we go again?”
“I don’t see why n-”
“Absolutely not! Lance your arm only just healed. If you break it again you won’t be ready come fall to meet your Knight Master. It was very nice of Cleon to give you the last two weeks of summer off to rest. You don’t want to disappoint him.”
“Yes Mother.”
“Go take care of your equipment Lance, I’m going to inspect it after lunch.” Wyldon clapped his son on the shoulder and pushed him lightly towards the keep.
Once their son was out of earshot, Kel turned to face Wyldon. “You could have hurt him.”
“Knights work through pain all the time. I know you don’t like it, but he has to learn. He isn’t your baby anymore.”
“I….” Kel sighed. “You’re right. I’m sorry. But I worry about him. He’s our only son”
“I worry too. But he’s strong like his mother, he’ll be fine.”
“I think he take after you more.”
“He only looks like me, he acts like you love.” Kel smiled. Lance did act like her. He alone of the children took more after her than their father.
“I suppose you’re going to do it again before Cleon comes back?”
“I’ll try not to unhorse him. Now would be a great time for him to learn to keep his seat.”
“And then, when he’s gone and the girls are back at the convent we can finally start tilting against each other again.”
“I’d love to.”
