Title: Close Call Rating: PG Length: 223 words Competitor: Wyldon Round/Fight: 1/A Summary: Wyldon almost gets caught.
-----
“Lord Wyldon!”
General Vanget barged through the study door without knocking. Startled, Wyldon bolted up in his chair and half-stood before wincing and slowly sitting back down.
“I’m sorry, milord,” Vanget said, chagrined. “I didn’t mean to disturb you—are you okay?”
“I’m fine, General,” Wyldon said in clipped tones. “What is it?”
From his scowl, Vanget knew not to idle. “One of the Scanran warlords wishes to speak with us,” he said hastily. “He’s sent a missive. He was the last one to join Maggur’s cause and one of the first to defect. We may be able to end this war entirely with him.”
Wyldon nodded curtly. “Leave the reports on my desk. I’ll see to them shortly.”
The other man blinked, perplexed that his commander clearly did not find this as crucial as he did. “Sir—”
“I said I’ll get to them soon,” Wyldon said, frowning. “I do have other papers to go over, and I highly doubt the warlord will offer us anything we’ll be able to use.”
“Er, well—yes, Lord Wyldon. You’re right. We’ll go over them later, then?”
“That will be fine.”
Wyldon watched as Vanget bowed his way out, totally poleaxed. After the door latched, he sagged with a sigh of relief.
“That,” he told Keladry, furiously blushing under his desk, “was a close one.”
