Title: Fidelity Rating: PG Length: 136 words Competitor: Baird Round/Fight: 1/D Summary: She’s faithful, in a strange way….
“Since when are you betrothed?” he asks, confused. Their relationship has been going on for several months, and while he doesn’t expect or demand exclusivity, she hasn’t indicated that she could love someone else. “Was it arranged?”
She shakes her head. “It came as a surprise, but it’s someone I’ve loved for a while. I can’t keep doing this with you if I’m in love with him, and intend to marry him after the war.”
“Can I ask who it is?”
She shifts uncomfortably. “Since you’ll find out soon enough,” she reasons, trailing off. Taking a deep breath, she squares her shoulders. “Sergeant Domitan of Masbolle.”
He stares at her, unblinking. Despite the other thoughts flying through his mind, a part of him notices that irony of her loyalty to the family, if not to him.

Though I think that Dom would be fairly liberal in the idea of a three-some! Perhaps a little less liberal with one third being his uncle... I found this to be surprisingly poignant. It's there in the way that Baird is moderately surprised by her confession, moderately unsurprised by the answer, and in the way Kel tries to give a complete reason for breaking things off.

I'm glad you found this poignant - I really wasn't sure how to handle it when I was writing. But I liked Baird's reaction... he's so nonplussed.
