The next evening, Kel, the prince, and Neal decided to study in Neal's room. They had just opened their books when someone knocked on the open door. It was Seaver, his books under one arm. Behind him stood Merric's sponsor, Faleron.
"I need help with mathematics," Seaver told Kel, his dark eyes meeting hers squarely. "Would you mind?"
Kel shook her head.
"You got space for me?" Faleron wanted to know. "I need to pick Neal's brain for this paper Sir Myles wants me to write. Besides, everybody knows it's warmer with more people in the room."
They had excuses that first time, but apparently making up fresh ones after that was too much work. Merric came with them the next night and gave no explanation at all. The newcomers became regular additions to Neal's study group.

"See?" Faleron turned to Merric as they walked back to his room. "That wasn't so bad!"
Merric scowled. "Hmph! I only went there with you tonight because you completely abandoned me last night."
Faleron elbowed him in his ribs. "Oh, come on, Merric! Just admit that you had a much better time studying with the larger group than you ever did when it was only the two of us."
"I would have had fun if she hadn't been there."
"Mithros! What, pray tell, has the poor girl done now to deserve your continuing enmity?"
"Enmi-- what?" Merric stopped and scratched his head. "Faleron, you've got to stop using such big words. You sound like one of Father's lawyers."
Faleron sighed and turned to his cousin. "Why do you still despise Keladry of Mindelan? Did she just whack your fingers to death on the practice court again?"
Merric protested, "That only happened once - and I whacked her fingers first! No, she just ... gets on my nerves. That's all. She keeps sticking her cute little nose in where it doesn't belong and everything keeps getting worse and worse with Joren."
"Her cute little nose?" Faleron smiled widely. "So ... you think Kel's nose is cute, do you?"
"I ... I didn't mean ... anything by it," Merric stammered. "I just ... it wasn't ... oh, blast! Just shut up, Faleron!" And he stomped off to his own room without saying goodnight.
Faleron complied with his kinsman's wish. He really hadn't wanted the conversation to go any further, either, especially since he happened to agree with Merric - Kel did have a cute nose. But he felt that it was best to keep that thought all to himself for the time being.
