....Kel shook her head and left her room.
Turning around after she locked up, she nearly tripped over Merric. He shoved her. "I didn't ask you to come bullocking in!" he yelled. "I don't need you to defend me!"
Kel held up her hands and stepped back. "I didn't do it for you," she told him.
"Now they'll give me all kinds of grief, saying I got a girl to--hunh?"
Kel sighed. "I didn't do it for you all right? I wanted to pick a fight with them and you were there, that's all."
The noise was drawing other pages out of their rooms.
"Just leave me alone!" Merric yelled, uncomfortably aware of their audience. He punched Kel in the left arm, then the right, as if daring her to hit back.

Faleron dragged Merric back into his room and shut the door behind them, closing out all the other curious pages. Then he spun his cousin around and slapped the top of his head. "Idiot! That's the wrong target! You're supposed to go after Joren and his cronies - not the Girl!"
"But she--" sputtered Merric.
"But nothing, Merric," Faleron spat out. "Didn't you hear what she said? She wasn't trying to defend you - she was just trying to prove a point!"
"Well, I wish she'd prove her points when someone else is being hazed!" Merric demanded angrily.
"Why don't you take a stand against your real target?" Faleron asked. "Go ahead and challenge Joren; get it over with."
"I don't see you or any of the other senior pages challenging Joren in the practice ring," Merric countered sullenly.
"Well, no ..." Faleron shrugged and opened his door. Seeing that the hall was empty, he beckoned for his kinsman to follow him and whispered, "That's because Stone Mountain is the best swordsman among us pages right now. No one can beat him with a staff or at hand-to-hand combat, either. And when he prowls the halls, he's always got his cronies with him."
"Hmph!" Merric grumbled as they hurried toward the dining hall. "Some sponsor you've turned out to be."
Faleron just smiled back at him and pushed him along.
