Lord Wyldon came to the lectern. "I know you all wish to pack. Get to it. Keladry of Mindelan, report to my office at the next bell."
"I'm sorry," whispered Merric. He got up awkwardly and fled the room.
"You saved my life," Seaver added, his voice cracking. He hugged her one-armed around the head as if she were one of the boys, and followed Merric out.
When none of her other friends moved, Kel forced herself to rise and pick up her tray. "Have a good summer," she whispered, and took her things to the servants for the last time.

Faleron sat next to Merric on the redheaded page's bed. All of their belongings were packed and they were ready for the servants to load the wagon for their trip to King's Reach. Merric would spend part of his vacation with Faleron's family, since his mother and sisters were already visiting their kinfolk there. Then Baron Kendric, Merric's father, would send for his wife and children and they'd return to Hollyrose for the remainder of the summer break.
"I can't believe the Stump won't let Kel stay," Merric's voice cracked as he spoke, but he refused to allow the moisture in his eyes to escape down his face. "She ... she's just as good as any of us!"
Faleron nodded. "And she's even better than certain others of us." He was thinking of Joren and Vinson and the other bullies.
"I hope Kel will keep in touch with us after ... after she's gone," Merric said. "I think I'll write to her every week. Do you think she'd write back to me?"
Faleron didn't answer right away. He was too caught up in his own daydream of what it might be like to exchange letters back and forth with Keladry of Mindelan. He silently wondered what Kel might look like if she grew out her hair and styled it the way his sisters and the princess did. He also wondered what kind of lady Kel might become someday and if she'd remember him fondly as someone who had been nice to her during her time as a page.
"I hope so, Merric," he finally replied. "I certainly hope so."
